Situated at the foot of Mont Blanc and
with its immense tradition of both skiing and mountaineering,
Chamonix provides some of the best skiing in Europe. There are five
ski areas in the Chamonix Valley - Les Houches, Le Brevent, La
Flégère, Argentière and the Vallée Blanche.
Les Houches and La Flégère both provide some excellent skiing for beginners and intermediate skiers, whilst for the advanced Argentière has some of the finest powder skiing in the world and one of the largest mogulfields anywhere on the Continent. But it is, of course, to ski the Vallée Blanche that people come from all over the world. The cable car rises in two stages straight out of Chamonix 9,000 vertical feet to the Aiguille du Midi, and from there one commences this fantastic run of 12 kilometres down the Vallée Blanche back into Chamonix. It is a run that can be made by 3rd, or perhaps good 2nd year skiers, and is an all-day run for which skiers normally take a packed lunch and stop on a part of the glacier known as La Salle à Manger, to enjoy the quite spectacular scenery. It is also possible to ski down to Courmayeur in Italy and return through the Mont Blanc tunnel. |
